Travis Denton is singularly unimpressed by his first sighting of Darcy Farrell, the sister of his late wife who has possession of Brooke, an eight year old whom Travis believes is his daughter.  As he continues to observe from afar, he becomes increasingly convinced that the woman who has custody of his daughter is in fact no more than a sleazy lady of the evening!  For her part, stay-at-home business secretary Darcy has done her best to raise her niece as she believes her sister would have had her do and has no idea that Kelly was ever married, much less that she knew who the father of her baby was.  As the legal eagles try to work out an equitable resolution, Travis realizes that his first impression was in fact incorrect, and he poses as Darcy’s new American boyfriend in order to get to know Brooke while they await the results of the paternity test.  Will these THREE HEARTS find a way to beat as one?

Ms. Perkins has written a charming tale set in her home country of New Zealand, complete with the alternative spellings of words and all.  This tale is somewhat reminiscent of the Harlequin romances this reviewer read in her youth that were set in that part of the world, and that is a complement!  It is tender and sweet, a most refreshing alternative to many of today’s contemporary tales.  This is not to say that the story is without the requisite sexual tension that makes romances so compelling.  The lure is there, it is just more understated.  Ms. Perkins’ descriptions of some of the famous sites in New Zealand were breathtaking and the reader can easily form mental pictures of the lush topography of that nation.  The reader will alternatively feel sympathetic to the plight of Darcy and Travis and will hope that a solution to the dilemma of who should have custody of Brooke will work out happily for all. A tad more plot development would turn this good solid read into a fabulous one, as the ending seemed a bit rushed.  This, however, did not detract from this reviewer’s enjoyment of the story.  A great spring read!  Recommended!

New Zealander Darcy Farrell has been raising her orphaned niece, Brooke, for the last eight years.  Her sister had died in childbirth and had listed the father as unknown on the birth certificate.  So when Travis Denton suddenly arrives from America and claims that no only was he her sister’s husband, he is Brooke’s father too, she’s stunned!  She’s not convinced that Travis knows what he’s talking about.  However, Travis is determined that his daughter will come to America and live with him.  How can Brooke part with the child she’s loved as her own for the last eight years?  As Darcy and Travis spend time together in order to allow Travis to get to know Brooke, they begin to have deeper feelings for each other.  Darcy isn’t sure that Travis’s feelings for her alone, or because of his daughter.  Can they form a family together?

Three Hearts was an enjoyable read.  I grew to care about both Travis and Darcy, even though occasionally you want to hit Travis for his totally oblivious determination to tear his daughter from the only home and mother she’s ever known.  While the story occasionally slows to a crawl, I was still invested in Travis and Darcy’s finding their happy ending together.  Three Hearts is most certainly an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon!

When Travis Denton learns he has an eight-year-old daughter, he leaves his home in California and heads to New Zealand to meet her. When he meets Darcy Farrell, young Brooke’s guardian, he tells her he wants custody of Brooke. Too, he plans to take her with him to the States. Darcy has only Brooke’s best interests in mind, and decides to give Travis a chance to get to know his daughter. They spend a great deal of time together as Brooke and Travis begin to bond. The problem arises when Darcy feels herself falling for Travis. Can she do what is best for Brooke and still satisfy her own heart?

Three Hearts is one of those gentler contemporary romance stories that leaves its reader smiling at the ending. There are ups and downs in the plot and Travis and Darcy do butt heads but overall there is a softer feel to this book than many other books have. It is a refreshing change of pace, and it kept me spellbound. The dialogue flows smoothly, the characters are well written and although the attraction between this couple is obvious it is not without obstacles. Brooke is an ordinary child and endearing to the reader since she seems like a little girl that anyone would know. New Zealand’s beauty shines in this. I could see it all. I enjoyed every minute of this story. Well done, Ms. Perkins!
